Common Sources of Poor Indoor Quality Air

Poor indoor air quality can come from a variety of sources in your home, including everyday activities such as cooking and cleaning. For this reason, it’s impractical and almost impossible to try to completely avoid all sources of poor indoor air quality, so it’s important to instead work to actively counteract them so they have as little impact on your life as possible. Improving your air filtration and purification with modern technology can help!

Here are just a few reasons for poor quality indoor air in a home:

  • Combustion appliances: Furnaces, water heaters, and gas-burning stoves can release harmful contaminants, like carbon monoxide, into your home.
  • High moisture levels: Moist and damp areas of your home create an ideal environment for mildew and mold growth.
  • Dust and pet dander: Airborne pollutants like dander and dust can trigger allergic reactions and increased asthma symptoms.
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs): VOCs are common in household cleaners and building materials and can impact your IAQ without proper ventilation.
  • Outdoor pollutants: Wildfires, emissions, and other outside pollutants can affect your home’s breathing air.

We Install a Great Selection of Air Purifiers

Air purifiers work in a number of different ways, but most operate on a simple principle: pulling dirty air through a filtration or treatment medium to either remove or neutralize airborne pollutants and allergens. They come in a wide selection of sizes, features, and models, and some advanced systems will even utilize multiple treatment methods for additional purification power.

Here are just a few of the air purification technologies our systems use:

  • HEPA filtration: High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters can remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 microns or larger in size, including bacteria, dust, pollen, and more. For perspective, a single human hair is around 100 microns thick.
  • Activated carbon filters: Carbon air filters have a porous structure that’s designed to attract and absorb pollutants, odors, and VOCs from the air.
  • Ionization: Ionizing air purifiers use an electrical charge to produce negative ions that attach to airborne particles like dust, pollen, smoke, and bacteria. These systems also use a positively-charged grid to attract the negatively charged particles, trapping them.
  • UV germicidal lights: Ultraviolet germicidal lamps emit UV-C light at low levels to destroy airborne bacteria, viruses, and mold spores by disrupting their DNA. UV-C radiation is perfectly safe and won’t harm your home!
  • Energy-preserving ventilation systems: An energy-preserving ventilation system allows exchange your indoor air for fresh air from outside while also exchanging heat energy to maintain your indoor air temperature and avoid energy loss!

While these technologies are fantastic, not all systems are designed to handle them. For example, putting a HEPA filter straight into your HVAC system will probably cause extensive damage to your system’s blower motor that is not designed to handle that kind of resistance in your air duct pathway. Talk to one of our team members about the technologies you are interested in and we can work with you to find the best way to integrate them into your current HVAC setup for optimal efficiency.
